One of my favorite places in Oklahoma City. Architectural Antiques, a huge warehouse full of the most amazing pieces of architecture you've ever seen. It feels like you are being warped back in time, when minimalism didn't exist, and craftsman were sought after. Amazing.

Last Sunday I wandered around downtown, as I often do, taking pictures of art deco motifs. I somehow stumbled inside a building that I never knew existed, and is only open to the public by appointment. The door happened to be unlocked, and I was too curious to resist. Inside I found one of the most amazing art deco buildings I have seen in person. The bank is absolutely beautiful, and it still contains all of the original details. It was completely empty and dark, but still lovely. Take a gander and some of the original pictures of the place.

I stumbled upon this amazing website, Hudson Furniture Inc. Hudson Furniture Inc. respects the natural forms of trees and inherent grain of wood with well defined organic lines and geometric forms using traditional joinery techniques and hand rubbed oil finishes. Not only do they have furniture but they also have lighting. The Atlantis Chandelier caught my eye, isn't it lovely? There is something so nostalgic about it, and yet the design is completely modern and fresh.

Lately I have found myself obsessing over inlays, partially due to my furniture class. I have been doing so much research on art deco pieces, and the inlays is really one thing that draws me in like a moth to a flame. Here is a beautiful inlaid box with mermaid. This piece is Scandinavian and from the 1930's. Isn't it lovely?

Ella Fitzgerald, who was known as the "First Lady of Song.

I have recently stumbled across a wide range of amazing black and white photos which all beared the name "Bettmann/Corbis". Curious I did a little research and found a treasure trove of images.

Born on October 15, 1903 in Leipzig, Germany, Dr. Otto Bettmann began his professional career at the Prussian State Art Library in Berlin as a curator of rare books.

When his career path was foreshortened by the rise of Nazism, Dr. Bettmann packed his belongings, including two steamer trunks full of pictures, books, and films and moved to New York City in 1935.

His arrival in New York coincided with the dawning popularity of photojournalism. Movie newsreels and pictorial magazines had sparked what he called "the beginning of the visual age." Speaking of his good fortune, Dr. Bettmann said, "Everybody wanted pictures, and I had two trunks full."

Dr. Bettmann soon created an industry for himself, collecting and classifying images for publication. His first clients included Look Magazine , LIFE , and the Book-of-the-Month Club. And public demand for images grew, fueled first by World War II, then by television. But it wasn't just serendipity that marked his success. Dr. Bettmann selected his pictures with an amazing eye for historical relevance, artistic composition, drama, and humor.

By 1938, the Archive comprised 15,000 pictures, and today it contains more than 11 million, many of which are more than 100 years old.

1,200 books and eight hours of hard labor later the J.Crew windows were completed. I am so pleased with how they turned out- and thankful that although times are tough, creativity still thrives in the retail industry.

Sid Mashburn is a men's specialty clothing store in Atlanta and was voted as one of GQ's 100 best men’s stores in America. It is a perfect blend of all- American tradition, southern charm, and metropolitan chic. Akin to a modern-day gentleman’s club, every piece spread throughout the dark-stained wood shelves and tables reeks of quality and has a classic sensibility.

I must say, that doing visuals for J.Crew has me appreciating a more traditional and sophisticated style than I have been accustomed to. This is more of my parents taste, and I think that I had been weary to appreciate something lacking of eccentricity; But I must say- I am changing my tune indeed.

My bedroom has been in need of an update. But being more of a collector, it is something that transpires over time. I saw these pictures and just absolutely fell in love. Its classic, simple, clean, and cozy. I myself will have a few eclectic pieces thrown in, but you get the picture. And believe me, I have never been one to be drawn to purple- but there is just something about it. It will go amazing with this olive throw I have. Who knew I would be drawn to something so traditional?

Magnum Dining Bar - Hillery Priest Architecture

The Magnum Dining Bar is inspired by the geometry and stylized patterning of the Art Deco period and represents a haven of luxury and comfort. Cavernous in volume, the low-slung diamond shaped crown and lowered bar provides a luminous focus for diners, while surrounded by an interior which is highly crafted and elegant. Dark oak cabinetry, delicately engraved timber wall paneling and polished brass metalwork mixed with soft metallic furnishings set the scene for a memorable dining experience.

Marion Davies Beach House.

Marion Davies was an actress in the 1920's, but is most known for her affair with Newspaper Tycoon William Hearst . He was married for the entirety of their relationship, due to the fact that a divorce from his wife would be too costly. Upon further research their relationship seems quite strained (obviously), as he was quite controlling. Nevertheless, he built her this beach house in Santa Monica, which is absolutely amazing. It still stands and is currently used as a beach club.

She was known to have large parties and entertained Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and Mary Pickford. Shown below is a picture from a birthday party with a circus theme attended by (left to right) Irene Dunne, William Randolph Hearst, Bette Davis, Louella Parsons and Mary Brian.

It’s refurbishment plays off the frisson of its proximity to the theatres… back to when it started, so conveniently situated next to the stage doors, when it was a favourite of Edward VII, Lily Langtry and Oscar Wilde. In addition to a Brasserie and the Champagne Bar, there is a Pudding Bar for breakfast, tea or late night treats and a club-like space 'The Apartment'. Kettner’s has many spaces for hire, including bookable nooks in the champagne bar, private dining rooms and the original ‘cabinets particuliers’ which have been restored, plus the Salle de Fete - an ideal space for drinks and canapés for up to 200 people. The Hotel Chelsea is a well-known residence for artists, musicians and writers in the neighborhood of Chelsea in Manhattan, New York City. It is located at 222 West 23rd Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

Built in 1883, the hotel originally accommodated both overnight and long-term guests; it is primarily known for its history of long-term residents. The Chelsea has housed numerous writers, musicians, artists, and actors. Notable long-term residents include Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Dylan Thomas, Sid Vicious and multiple people associated with Andy Warhol's Factory. Currently, the hotel no longer accepts long term residents, with a maximum stay limit of 21 days.

It has been some time since my last post, as I have just been enjoying the summer months. I hate that I have taken so long off, as it is a way to catalog my inspiration and findings. Nevertheless, I am back and ready to share my thoughts.

I have been spending the days relaxing by the pool, running errands, vintage hunting and watching old movies. Isn't summer divine? Here are some pictures of recent inspirations.

Neocon Design Competition

Hello friends,

The voting has begun for the Neocon Greenlife Competition and i urge and beg you to please go online and vote for my project (University of Oklahoma Group 2, towards the bottom of the page). The Goal was to find a place on our campus that needed a face lift and do so with ecofriendly materials. When we saw the dorm rooms we just knew that we had met our match. Our Metamorphosis Residence Hall is not only eco-friendly but innovative. The furniture will be

custom made for the space and meets the needs of the students.

The Neocon trade show will build the top two designs this summer, and I would absolutely love to see our design brought to life. Voting is open March 16-30, and you can vote multiple times :)

Sundays are the perfect day to go antique shopping and read at Barnes and Noble. Today while I was paroling the magazine aisle I spotted a new addition, InsideOut Magazine. This Australian Home magazine is amazing. Its slogan is "Inspiring Homes with Heart." Go to your local book store and see if you can track it down; I promise it will be worth it. The spaces are interesting, and it doesn't feel as trendy as some of the other magazines. I am in love, now if only I could subscribe to it.

I am currently reading The Architecture of Happiness and am enjoying every second of it. Alain de Botton states that one of the great, but often unmentioned, causes of both happiness and misery is the quality of our environment: the kind of walls, chairs, buildings and streets we are surrounded by. The book offers a tour through the philosophy and psychology of architecture, which aims to change the way we think about our lives. I highly suggest reading this one, if you already haven't.

Art Deco Florals.

The name Art Deco comes from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes, held in Paris, which celebrated living in the modern world. The style began in France but American became the center of this artistic movement. Art Deco was the style of modern decoration and was applied to jewelry, clothing, furniture, and buildings. Industrial designer used Art Deco motifs to adorn their streamlined cars, trains and kitchen appliances as well. Art Deco ornamentation consists largely of low relief geometric designs often in the form of parallel straight lines, zigzags, chevrons and stylized floral motifs.

Lately I have become so fascinated by the modern floral designs and have been seeing them around every turn. Hopefully my generation will see a unique style of ornamentation and design that I can gush about in the future, the way i do with designs of the past.

Rollei is a german manufacturer of optical goods that was founded in 1920. They are most famous for their twin lens camera, and it has become a cult favorite. My grandfather gave me his, shortly before passing away and I am eager to use it. Rollei is still making cameras, and digital ones can be purchased at urban outfitters. I will post the pictures as soon as I get them developed, but for now enjoy the images of this vintage beauty.

Art Nouveau 1890-1914, explores a new style in the visual arts and architecture developed in Europe and North America at the end of the nineteenth century. At its height a hundred years ago, Art Nouveau was a concerted attempt to create an international style based on decoration. It was developed by a brilliant and energetic generation of artists and designers, who sought to fashion an art form appropriate to the modern age. During this extraordinary time, urban life as we now understand it was established. Art Nouveau was in many ways a response to the Industrial Revolution. Some artists welcomed technological progress and embraced the aesthetic possibilities of new materials such as cast iron. Recently I have been drawn to all things orange, which is quite unusual because normally I do not care for orange at all.

Orange, a close relative of red, sparks more controversy than any other hue. There is usually strong positive or negative association to orange and true orange generally elicits a stronger "love it" or "hate it" response than other colors. Fun and flamboyant orange radiates warmth and energy. Interestingly, some of the tones of orange such as terra cotta, peach and rust have a very broad appeal. Orange is known to stimulate activity as well as appetite and also encourages socialization. I think that Orange can be unexpected, and when used properly it can energize a room (without overwhelming it).
